Spicy, Asian-y, and Beefy.

With the holidays, friends in town, and lots to celebrate (congratulations again, J & M on your engagement!), I’ve been going out to eat a lot and haven’t been doing a whole lot of cooking.  In my defense, this blog makes it seem like I never cook at all, which isn’t true.  I just haven’t trained R the dog to take pictures while I’m cooking and I often forget to take them myself.

To prove to my dad you that I do actually cook, I’m going to start making a better effort to include more recipes here.  Starting with this one:

Happy 2012!

Happiest happy new year!

What an eventful year 2011 was for me: I tried my first case in the clinic I was in at law school, I graduated law school, I moved to California with R, I took and passed the bar, I was sworn into the California State Bar making me an actual real lawyer, I got a new job, and I started this blog.  Whew.  I’m excited to see what 2012 brings!

The end of 2011 was lovely.  R and I had a special first Christmas Eve dinner together.

Roast crispy duck with soy sauce, honey, molasses glaze.

The combination of a very long trip to Best Buy on Christmas Eve and a still partially frozen duck even after it had been thawing in the fridge for three days pushed back dinner to 10:30pm.  R was such a gentleman though and didn’t complain one bit even though I know he was probably starving.  I followed the instructions from The Hungry Mouse.  It was good, but some parts were a bit dry.  The legs were awesome though and now I got a big jar of duck fat in the fridge I’m dying to cook with.

Can’t go wrong with butter, cream, cheese, and vodka.

I saw this recipe for penne and vodka sauce on a delightful blog called What’s For Dinner?  I’ve been dying to try it ever since the lovely blogger featured it in a post about her and her husband’s anniversary dinner (so cute).  I mean, how can you go wrong with butter, cream, cheese, and vodka?  You CAN’T.

Rich and creamy and hearty. A big warm bowl of fantastic carby goodness.

I baked and it didn’t suck.

I am not a baker.  I love love love to cook but I just cannot get into baking.  I’ve told people I just don’t like how calculated everything is with baking.  That, unlike cooking, which is more akin to art, baking is architecture and one wrong move and the whole building comes crashing down.  It just doesn’t allow for the same sort of free flowing artistic expression.

Truth is, I’m just not good at it.

I can relate to this all too well.

But regardless, every once in a while the craving to bake kicks in.  I find some delicious looking recipe online that compels me to dust off my little hand mixer I got with my Westlaw points my 3L year.  I like the idea of me baking.  Making desserts with my future rugrats, filling the house with delicious baked good aromas, being the ENVY OF ALL THE PARENTS.  But I don’t particularly like doing it and the end product is often… disappointing.

Like last week when I came across a recipe for “The Chewiest Chocolate Chip Cookies” from Andie at a lovely blog I follow called Can You Stay for Dinner?…I just had to try it.

Nothing says love like fried chicken.

I hate handling chicken.  In my near 30 years of existence I don’t think I started buying raw chicken to prepare at home until last year.  You might find that unusual because it seems like chicken is a pretty standard intro meat that even the most novice cooks prepare, but I know for a fact that I am not the only one who finds it disgusting (I’m looking at you, V).  It just doesn’t seem right that if you undercook it or accidentally contaminate something with it (see, no other meat I can think of can contaminate stuff), you DIE.  Fine, I might be exaggerating a bit, but it’s still gross.

All that to say, I always tell R that I must really love him to cook him chicken.  This next recipe is quite tasty and I’m a big fan of the final product, but the preparation makes me squeamish.  Now, before you click away because you’re thinking I’m about to make some crazy offal dish, I’m telling you that you might want to stick around for some tasty, crispy, and spicy Buffalo chicken wings.
